The original farm Alewynspoort was made up of a number of even dating back to the part of the early development period of Johannesburg after the Anglo Boer War. A manor house was built halfway up the rocky outcrop of the poort that was well-known for the wild Aloes that grew there from which the name Alewynspoort was derived.
In 2014 the Art Farm was established in this historic area.
Our vision is to create a place where our love for art, music, food, wine, and sports could offer a unique experience to inspire our guests. To create a place where everything is about art.
Our mission is to accomplish an idyllic environment where peace reigns. A place where the art of food, the art of winemaking and visual arts meet. A place where the written word is celebrated and where nature soothes the soul. A place where music and children’s laughter create the perfect ambiance for a relaxing long lazy afternoon experience.
The vintage venue and adjacent rustic bar is the ideal venue for weddings, parties, conferences. With its dedicated kitchen guests are treated to sumptuous, freshly made dishes.
The original farmhouse was constructed in 1948. Wooden floors and an original handcrafted fireplace sets a cosy atmosphere where one can sit back, relax and enjoy fine cuisine and handcrafted wine. Our highly trained chefs are sure to prepare mouth-watering meals to tickle your taste buds. Rooms can also be booked for private functions. Each room sets the scene for a different experience. For a more social environment, our large “stoep” looks out onto the swimming pool and cocktail bar.
Coffee Shop & Kiddies Play Area
Who would have thought that an old milk stall could be converted into a coffee shop? The building was first used as a residential home that was later renovated and is now a book shop and coffee shop. With a safe children’s play area nearby, parents can enjoy their fresh brew while keeping an eye on the little ones. Our large lapa’s are the ideal venue for kiddie’s parties, rain or shine.
Our old garage is now a luxury country-style stone bakery. The bakery offers a wide variety of baked goods that can be bought to enjoy immediately or ordered for special occasions. The bakery provides our coffee shop and restaurant with fresh bread, pasta and pastries so that fresh, home made goods can be enjoyed everywhere on the farm.
The art farm lives up to its reputation with the enticing art stalls – seventeen stables were converted into art stalls where only art products are sold. Strolling from stable to stable visitors will delight in the original pottery items, vintage furniture, paintings & winery.
